For off campus families: Accessing the MIT campus

September 14, 2022

During the pandemic, MIT locked the doors to most buildings. The only people who could enter those buildings were people who had to go to their offices or labs.

Now MIT opening up again. Some areas of the campus are open to anyone; other buildings are still locked. This process is ongoing. MIT is figuring out how to keep the campus safe but accessible and inclusive for all members of the MIT community.

As of September 2022:

  • Some buildings are open to everyone during certain hours of the day. This includes the Stata Center and the Student Center.

  • You can access other buildings with a visitor pass, called a Tim Ticket. A Tim Ticket allows temporary access to campus for individuals who do not have a Kerberos ID (the mit.edu identity which gives someone access to MIT systems and facilities). Spouses and partners living off campus are not currently eligible for a Kerberos ID.
    • The Tim Ticket is a QR code you can use to open doors on campus that are equipped with a QR code reader.
    • Your MIT spouse or partner can give you a Tim Ticket by using their MIT Atlas mobile app or going to https://visitors-admin.mit.edu/. You can also get a Tim Ticket from any other MIT student or staff member.
    • The Tim Ticket can give you access for up to one week at a time.

  • You don’t need Covid Pass to attend MIT Spouses & Partners Connect events. Whether the event is online, outdoors or indoors, or on or off campus, we will always explain any attendance requirements ahead of time.

You are eligible to…

  • Get an MIT ID Card. If you live off campus, consider getting an MIT ID card only if you are planning to purchase a membership to the MIT gym or use the libraries. Learn how to get an ID card.
  • Join the MIT gym. Learn more by visiting this webpage or send an email to memberservices@mit.edu.
  • Use the MIT libraries. Once you have your MIT ID card and a TIM Ticket, you can enter the libraries. Go to the circulation desk and ask them to activate your borrowing privileges.
  • Visit MIT Medical. You may enter the MIT Medical E23 building to access medical services without a Tim Ticket or Covid Pass.
  • Use the MIT Shuttles. The driver will ask you to show your MIT ID card when you board the shuttle. Find maps and schedules here or on your MIT Mobile App.
