My new hometown: Cambridge

By Kathrin Hauser (current MS&PC from Germany)

I am Kathrin, and I arrived together with my husband in Cambridge, MA in August 2021 during Covid. Nevertheless, we found new friends very quickly. MIT Spouses & Partners made it possible! All of the meetings with spouses from all over the world were very helpful to get started in this new city and to realize that everybody has the same problems, like applying and waiting for a work permit or a visa.

Furthermore, I attended an English class which reactivated my English skills that I learned as a teenager in school back in Germany.  The communication with international people was helpful to realize that I don’t have to speak perfect English. Even with my school English, I was able to talk to everyone. And I was delighted about getting my own native speaker tutor who supported me a lot.

During the first two years, I was working full-time at a school as a teacher, but there were still many chances to see my friends at events after work or on the weekends. At the beginning of this year, my husband and I were expecting our first child. Therefore, we attended classes which were offered by MIT, and I was seen by the doctors at MIT Health multiple times. We always felt in good hands.

Now, as a full-time mum, I love to attend the meetings of the new and expecting parents’ group and to exchange experiences about labor and taking care of a baby.

As you can and hopefully will see, it doesn’t matter in which stage of life you will arrive at MIT, there is always someone who can support you!
